Marine Corps Reserve Birthday - August 29, 1916

Honoring the Citizen Marines

On August 29, 1916, Congress created the United States Marine Corps Reserve — giving our Nation a new strength: Marines who stand ready both in uniform and in their communities.

From the beginning, the Marine Corps Reserve has answered every call.

In World War II, Reserve Marines stormed the beaches alongside their active-duty brothers.

In Korea and Vietnam, they fought with courage and sacrifice.

In Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan, they deployed again — proving that the title Marine knows no distinction between active or reserve.

But the Marine Corps Reserve isn’t just about warfighting.

It’s about service — defending our Nation while also leading in our hometowns as teachers, first responders, business owners, and neighbors.

The Reserve motto says it best:

“Ready, Responsive, Relevant.”

On this day, we honor every Marine who balanced family, career, and community — yet stood prepared to fight for freedom at a moment’s notice.

To the Marines who wear the eagle, globe, and anchor, whether active or reserve —

We remember you. We honor you.

We will never forget.
